To start a diamond painting, match each symbol on the adhesive canvas to its drill code, pick up a drill with the applicator and place it on the matching square. Work through a small section at a time rather than uncovering the whole canvas. This guide takes you from opening the kit to packing it away between sessions.
Check the kit before opening the drill packets
Lay out the canvas, labelled drill packets, tray, applicator and wax supplied with your kit. Check the contents against the product listing and instructions. Keep the packaging and contact the shop if something appears missing rather than substituting a similar-looking colour.
Drills are the small pieces placed on the canvas. Their colour codes and the printed symbols are different ways of identifying the same match; neighbouring shades can look almost identical. Use the legend on this particular canvas, not a chart from another kit.
Set up a manageable workspace
Choose a flat table with good light and enough room to keep your tray away from the edge. If you share the table, a rigid board can help you move the covered canvas without folding it. Keep small drills away from young children and pets.
Label resealable bags or lidded containers before transferring any drills. Include the canvas symbol and code, and keep the original labels until you finish. You do not need to decant every packet on the first day.
Place your first drills
- Choose a small starting section where your hand will not rest on exposed adhesive. Peel back only enough protective film to work comfortably.
- Read one symbol in that section and find its code in the canvas legend.
- Pour a few matching drills into the tray. Gently shake it to help the drills settle flat-side down.
- Load a little wax into the applicator tip, following its instructions. Pick up one drill by its faceted top.
- Place it gently on the matching symbol. Check its position before moving on; pressing harder is not a substitute for alignment.
- Continue with that colour in the exposed section, then return spare drills to the correct labelled container before opening another colour.
If something is not working
If drills will not lift, check the wax and that the drill is facing the right way. If two colours seem interchangeable, stop and recheck their codes. If rows start to drift, correct the small section before extending it across the canvas. Avoid household glue, solvents or heat as a quick repair; ask for advice if the adhesive or canvas is damaged.
Pause safely and finish carefully
Between sessions, replace the original protective film in its original orientation, close the drill containers and store the canvas without a sharp fold. Keep food and drinks away from the working surface.
When finished, inspect for empty symbols or misplaced drills and gently seat any raised pieces. Measure the artwork before buying a frame. Do not wash the finished canvas or assume it is suitable for a frequently handled household item.
